ESFR Systems for Warehouse Construction

ESFR, short for Early Suppression Fast Response, is viewed in the industry as one of the greatest technologies in recent history for fire protection.  This system was specifically designed to combat open frame rack type storage in warehouses that are no more than 45 feet in height without the need to install in-rack sprinkler systems. Ultimately saving You money.

With the initial development of this technology in the late 1970’s the ESFR systems have advanced even further with the technology of today which now offers dry systems for cold storage and more. Early Suppression Fast Response when referred in our industry is both a type of system and a type of sprinkler head. CMSA (Control Mode Specific Application) sprinklers use a quick response thermal element coupled with the use of a large droplet technology which allows efficient operation at lower pressures as well as improved penetration into the fire area. This also can reduce the number of sprinklers activated in the case of a fire.

As a general contractor there are many factors this can affect a sprinklers fast response to a fire. Factors like high velocity ventilation at the ceiling level, HVAC vents, ceiling slopes, flue spaces, solid shelving and more.  Let our experts at Superior Fire help you with any questions you should have in for your upcoming construction project today. Victaulic Firelock Fittings Saving Time

Victaulic firelock fittings are saving us time which is saving You money.

Superior Fire has been extremely pleased with these new fittings. Standard grooved couplings install up to 5 times faster than welded joints and up to 3 times faster than flanged. Now, Vactaulic installation-ready couplings install in less than half the time of standard couplings.

Reduced material handling means there is no loose bolts and nuts which translates to less hours on the jobsite. Because installation ready couplings require fewer steps to install the result is consistently faster pipe joints which allows us to to optimize crew size and better manage labor risk.

Facts about Home Fire Sprinklers

Debunking homebuilder myths about home sprinklers

Need residential fire sprinklers? Here at Superior Fire, over years, we have found that many developers, general contractors and home builders have had preconceived notions about these systems based on mostly bad information.  This article is to address a couple of the misconceptions about home fire sprinkler systems.

#1 – Fire Sprinklers are Expensive

A big myth for new home construction is that systems would cost as much as $10 per square foot for new construction.  The true cost is around $1.35 per square foot for new construction. $5 or $6 per square foot can happen. Usually because of an authority having jurisdiction which mandates NFPA 13D property protection features in design.  Life safety features and property protection will naturally come with a cost increase but this also expands the scope of function for protection of your lives and property. Money well spent.

#2 – Home Fire Systems are Too Complicated

Concerns that home owners would be overwhelmed by the amount of maintenance fire sprinklers require and that they’re too complicated to install is another common misconception.  Sprinkler Systems are similar in many ways to a domestic plumbing systems and neither are complicated systems or require extensive maintenance.  If You have additional questions or concerns give us a call @ (805) 477-0162

#3 – Sprinklers will detract from the look of the project.

One last big misconception is that fire sprinklers will be an eye sore and take away from the beauty of their new home or project.  Home builders don’t want ugly brass sprinklers creating eyesores in their new homes.  Concealed sprinkler covers can be painted to match your ceiling and can also be patterned with a wood grain finish to match cabinetry.  You will be suprised at how seamlessly concealed sprinklers blend into a homes interior.

Monthly Job Progress & New Projects

University of California, Santa Barbara

San Joaquin Student Housing Project

We are very excited to see the structures of the San Joaquin project start to rise up at the University of California, Santa Barbara!  Superior Fire has completed the rough for Cluster 4 and is currently installing in the south tower.

Two of the four wood-framed Villages along the north end of the site will be completely framed out by December 2015, and crews are working hard to close in as many buildings as possible before the inclement winter weather starts rolling in.  Over at the new Portola Dining Commons along El Colegio Road, all the foundations have been poured with only shear walls and the main level concrete deck remaining. Structural steel has been erected and the overall footprint of the new Portola with the amazing outdoor deck overlooking the mountains and pool are really taking shape. For the two new 6-story Towers on the corner of El Colegio Road and Storke Road, progress is moving along as well with the contractor rotating trades between the two towers one story at a time and metal stud framing starting on the lower levels.

An Intro to Vortex Nitrogen Systems from Victaulic

For Data Center and Control Room Applications

The Victaulic Vortex hybrid technology extinguishes via heat absorption and oxygen deprivation with minimal water presence. As little as ¼ gallon / 1 litre of water per minute per emitter utilized to suppress fires.

The system uses 97% less water than high-pressure water mist systems. For example, a space the size of two football fields can be protected by a system that activates immediately to extinguish a high hazard fire with around 3 gallons / 11 litres of water in less than four minutes.

Unlike other combined agent systems, the Victaulic Vortex hybrid system utilizes both nitrogen and water as complementary extinguishing agents. For smaller fires, the Victaulic Vortex system utilizes nitrogen as the primary extinguishing agent, reducing
the oxygen level in the space to a breathable level, where combustion cannot be sustained.

In larger fires, the water mist is more effective, cooling the fire by absorbing the heat and reducing the available oxygen. In fact, the heat-absorbing water droplet surface area is 90 times greater than that of any standard sprinkler system, providing maximum heat absorption efficiency.

Room Integrity – Unlike other systems, maintaining room integrity is not essential; fires are extinguished in open, naturally ventilated areas.

Emitter/discharge – High velocity and low pressure creates a uniform blend of water and nitrogen; water is introduced to a jet stream of nitrogen at supersonic speed, then delivered with the nitrogen into the protected space at 40 mph / 65 kph.

Made entirely of non-toxic agents – personnel are safe even during activation; reduction of oxygen in the space is at levels within safe breathing tolerances.
